Commission Approves Eight Recreational Trails Program Grant Applications

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved eight grant application requests for funding under the Recreational Trails Program at a meeting in Lincoln Jan. 17.

The seven grant applicantion requests and the amount of funds approved were:

– a request by the City of McCook for funds to construct 3,038-foot concrete trail that will go through a park and a city right-of-way area, $143,551;

-- a request by the City of Wahoo for funds to construct a 1,400-foot concrete trail through two city parks and connect with the Lake Wanahoo trail system yet to be built, $61,772;

– a request by the City of Lincoln for funds to replace a 2,465-foot asphalt trail with concrete in the greenway between Nebraska Highway 2 and the residential neighborhood, $129,100;

– a request by the City of Fort Calhoun for funds to construct a 2,475-foot concrete trail around the city's greenspace and park and include a trailhead parking facility, $136,320;

– a request by the City of Kearney to construct a 4,000-foot concrete trail that will traverse a new city subdivision and connect several parks, $180,948;

-- a request by the City of South Sioux City for funds to construct a 3,954-foot concrete trail connecting a residential area to a soccer complex, $134,564;

– a request by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for funds for continuation of construction of 14-20 miles of interior trails at Harlan County ATV Park at Harlan County Reservoir, $124,720;

-- a request by the Cities of Deshler and Hebron to amend an existing 2007 grant to provide funds for the land acquisition and development of trails within the purchased land. The natural-surface trails will be 11-14 miles long, $230,825.

Raffle to Benefit Conservation, Youth Outreach Programs

LINCOLN, Neb. - Tickets go on sale Saturday for the Nebraska Safari Club 2008 Commemorative Rifle and Shotgun Raffle. Three winners will each take home a different prize package.

Proceeds from the raffle go to support the conservation and youth outreach programs of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The prizes in the raffle are: a Kimber 8400 Classic .300 WSM rifle with Leupold Vari-X III Scope and SKB 4900 gun case, a Browning Gold CL Field 12-gauge shotgun, and a Henry .22 LR Lever rifle.

Tickets cost $10 each or three for $20. There is no limit to the number of entries. Winners will be drawn April 19 at the Nebraska Outdoors Expo in Kearney. Raffle participants need not be present to win. Winners will be notified by certified mail.

Take Your Family to the Holiday Craft Show at Eugene T. Mahoney SP Nov. 2-4

LINCOLN, Neb. – Take your whole family and attend the Holiday Craft Show at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park (SP) on Nov. 2, 4-8 p.m.; Nov. 3, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Nov. 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

There will be a wide range of crafts, face painting, Mom and Pop's Kettle Korn, tram tours of the park and all regular park activities on all three days. Plan to be on hand Saturday, Nov. 3, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. to see a display of ice sculptures by the Mahoney SP staff.

Also plan to attend the Old West Cookout featuring buffalo stew on Nov. 2, 5-8 p.m.; Nov. 3, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Nov. 4, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Eugene T. Mahoney SP is located just off of Interstate 80 exit 426. A park entry permit is required.
